Babcock University History

Babcock University(BU) began on September 17, 1959 as Adventist College of West Africa (ACWA). Established by the Seventh-day Adventist Church as a senior college for training church workers from the West African sub-region, ACWA opened its doors with only seven ministerial students.

IN 1966

By 1966, when it graduated the first set of Bachelor of Arts degree holders in its own name, enrolment included students taking Business Administration as potential accountants within and outside the Church; and two-year Pre-Nursing students in preparation to pursue a nursing career at the Church’s School of Nursing at Ile-Ife, Osun State.

IN 1975

History was made in 1975 when ACWA became the first institution in Nigeria to sign and operate an affiliation agreement with Andrews University, Berrien Springs, Michigan, USA. This relationship enabled it to award Bachelor of Arts degrees from Andrews University in Biology, Business Administration, History, Religion and Secretarial Studies.

IN 1975

1975 was also the year ACWA was renamed Adventist Seminary of West Africa (ASWA) in response to the dynamics of its socio-political environment. In 1983, restricting local factors again necessitated the phasing out of the Bachelors programmes in Biology and Business Administration. In 1988, ASWA reached another academic milestone through an affiliation agreement with the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary of Andrews University, which authorized it to offer Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministry. Master of Arts in Religion was added in 1990 and both programmes were operated during Summer sessions from 1997 to 2007.

In order to attain national recognition for its status and programmes, an attempt to obtain a local affiliation with University of Ibadan, under the name “Babcock College” was initiated.

IN 1999

The process of affiliation with the University of Ibadan was still in progress when the Federal Government of Nigeria included Babcock University as one of the first three private universities in the country, announced on April 20, 1999. At a public ceremony presided over by the then Honourable Minister of Education, Mr. Sam Olaiya Oni, at the National Universities Commission (NUC), Abuja, on May 10, 1999, the Certificate of Registration No:002 was handed over to BU Pioneer Chancellor and Chairman of the University Council, Pastor Luka T. Daniel in his capacity as the President of the Africa-Indian Ocean Division of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The Proprietors formally inaugurated the University on June 17, 1999.

The first batch of 1,006 students arrived on September 13, 1999 and their Matriculation Ceremony was presided over by the Visitor to the University, President of the General Conference and world leader of the Seventh-day Adventist Church from Washington, D.C, USA, Pastor/Professor Jan Paulsen, on January 28, 2000.

The University commenced with three faculties (which later became Schools)—Faculty of Education and Humanities, Faculty of Management and Social Sciences, and Faculty of Science and Technology with eleven departments. The School of Law and Security Studies became the fourth School. The 7th graduation on June 07, 2009 marked the 50th Anniversary of the institution, and the 10th Anniversary of the university. The event attracted Federal and State dignitaries, as well as leaders from the World Headquarters of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Being a pioneer private University in Nigeria since 1999, Babcock has continued this legacy of upholding a cutting-edge excellence in education. Babcock now has a postgraduate school which took off in the third quarter of 2010 and a medical school which took off in January 2012.

Babcock University Teaching Hospital (BUTH) successfully performed a rare surgery of cervical and lumbar spondylosis on a 65 years old man

Babcock University Teaching Hospital (BUTH), Ogun State, has successfully performed a rare surgery of cervical and lumbar spondylosis on a 65 years old man.

The BUTH medical team lead by Dr Kenechukwu Onuoha, disclosed that the patient was diagnosed with cervical and lumber spondylosis, a degenerative process in which the bones and joints begin to ‘wear and tear’.

Dr Onuoha, who heads the Accident and Emergency Unit of the hospital, says the ailment, which is mostly associated with the elderly, is due to the compression of the spinal cord.

“In the case of the patient in question, his condition was already leading to paralysis and needed urgent surgery because he was already getting weakness in both hands and legs, and unable to neither walk for months nor sign his signature.

“The patient couldn’t stand up, or raise his hands again. It became worse to the extent that most people thought he had a stroke,” the statement disclosed.

The patient had previously presented himself as a stroke patient to his doctor elsewhere before he was advised to see an orthopaedic surgeon in BUTH.

The good news is that the patient could now walk around without assistance, could also conveniently do all those things he was unable to do, and even recently celebrated his birthday.

Sufferers of cervical and lumbar spondylosis usually have pains in the upper limbs, the hands and legs and in more severe cases, weaknesses.

Onuoha observed that though the disease was common, the surgery was rare, as in this case it involved a 360 degrees cervical decompression of spinal cord.

“What this means in a layman’s term is that we approach his spinal cord from the front and from the back, thus allowing us to address all the problems because the spinal cord was compressed from the front and the back,” Onuoha said.

The surgery is the first of its kind in the teaching hospital and Ogun State, adding that Babcock University is now in a position to conduct those surgeries for which many Nigerians travel to India, UK and U.S.

“But I thank God that it is something that can now be done here in Babcock to reverse medical tourism,” said Dr Onuoha further.

On the secret behind the success of the surgery, which lasted for about six hours, BUTH is blessed to have an intra operative imaging device that could help in identifying the exact problem for the doctors to undertake the surgery.

BUTH is a place where medical tourism could be reversed as far as orthopedics was concerned.

Adventist in Ile-Ife, Nigeria – Facts and history

Adventist in Ile-Ife, Nigeria – Facts and history

Seventh Day Adventist church in Ile-Ife, Nigeria, started as far back as 1937, when Pastor William McClement from Northern Ireland, who was then the leader of missionary work in western Nigeria, had an encounter with the Ooni (leader) of Ife, His Royal Majesty, Sir Titus Adesoji Aderemi. Since Aderemi came to the throne in 1930, he had been calling for collaboration with anyone who was ready to assist him in the development of Ile-Ife.

The Seventh-day Adventist Church benefited from this yearning of the king by arriving when the development of Ile-Ife was highly needed. As a result, the Adventist missionaries, led by Pastor Gothic Till were warmly received. When the missionaries looked for accommodation, they met Pa Samuel Odunlade Akobi in his Cocoa Storehouse at Idi-Aje, Oja-Ife. Pa Akobi was then the Balogun of St. Philip’s Anglican Church in Ayetoro, Ile-Ife. Pastor Till explained to Akobi their mission and need for a place of worship.

Akobi consented to let them use his house at No. 27 Itapa Street, Ajamopo, which was formerly used as a springboard for the establishment of Oduduwa College (the first college in Ile-Ife, initiated by Oba Aderemi). Those of Pa Odunlade Akobi’s household were the first Adventist converts in Ile-Ife.

The advent of the church witnessed a series of challenges, because Sabbath worship seemed strange to the people in Ile-Ife; hence, the church was called by many names. In response, a series of lectures was organized by Pastor Till to enlighten them about the present truth.

In 1929, Pastor William McClement appealed to the General Conference for assistance in establishing a hospital in western Nigeria. The idea was welcomed, and by 1930, US$8,616 was raised toward the project. In 1939, nine years later, the General Conference delegation, led by Dr. G. A. Madgwick, went to Nigeria to search for a location on which the hospital could be established. After they had explored Yorubaland, the delegates chose Lagere, Idi-Omo, Ile-Ife, as a suitable place to build the hospital.

The decision was received with great joy and enthusiasm by the Ooni of Ile-Ife, Oba, Sir Adesoji Aderemi, and he leased 40 acres of land to the Seventh-day Adventist mission. He also donated US$1,000 to support the project. In 1940, the foundation of the hospital was laid by this same king, and construction started in earnest under the supervision of Pastor Gothic Till.

World War II found the hospital near completion, and in 1941 the British soldiers took over the hospital and converted it into a military hospital where they treated their casualties. The hospital was returned to the mission in 1944, and the mission bought an extra 50 acres of land for its expansion.

The Adventist hospital has been a beehive of activity since 1944, when it was returned to the mission. By 1958, the hospital in Ile-Ife had a bed capacity of 125, and the beds were constantly occupied. Between 1944 and 1958, the number of outpatients increased from 14,600 to 108,566 each year. By 1959, the Ile-Ife Mission Hospital cared for a total of 100,000 people in the city, as well as a large number who lives many miles from the hospital. It has considerably improved the health of Nigerians. Infant mortality has been reduced because of this institution, and many people have received free treatment. The present king, Ooni, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, was born in this hospital.

The Seventh-day Adventist schools established in 1958 had a great influence on the development of Ife because many who graduated from these schools grew up to become people of influence in the society and in Nigeria at large. At present, the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Ile-Ife owns five primary schools and three secondary schools. Currently, there are more than 22 local churches and companies in the city and its surrounding villages.

Rising cases of rape – The way forward

Rising cases of rape – The way forward

Rape has a history that almost equaled the history of man’s creation. It is on record that the first recorded incidence of rape in the Bible was in the Book of Genesis.

In Nigeria, the offense of rape is a heinous crime and the drafters of the Criminal Code deemed it fit for life imprisonment upon conviction.

Despite all these, rape in Nigeria seems to be on the increase and the question on every lip is, what is the way forward.

First of all, thieves, rapists, and other psychos will always be there. What will should focus on is how to avoid them.

We live in a world where we have a lot of psychos and they will be around till Christ comes. For example, I live in Warri, Delta state, for me to stay safe, I have to avoid night movements. The only time I have encountered armed robbers in Warri was when I was out till 9pm.

What I am trying to say is that no matter how we preach, rapists will always be there and they are criminals just like armed robbers.

The best thing is to know your environment and know how to avoid them. You as a girl, try to avoid soft spots like lonely roads, nights and meeting up unknown guys in hotels. Don’t also move alone in a quiet/dark place.

Parents with female children should be careful the way guys (uncles, pastors, friends etc) play with their daughter and also do well to educate their male children as well.

And you guys raping girls, you will reap what you sow one day.
